Theatrescience investigates ‘Darwin in India’

July 22, 2010 :: Related project: Darwin In India

‘Darwin In India’ - a ‘script in progress’ by Jeff Teare addressing the impact of Darwinian theory on Indian scientific and intellectual practice – had its first public reading at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) on 30 June.

The purpose of the reading was not only to test out the script, but also to engender a debate at NCBS about the impact of Darwin and Evolution on Indian thought and culture. The discussion soon became quite animated, with many audience members as keen to comment on the way NCBS-type staff were portrayed as to address the issues raised by the play!

Audience members and cast discussed how many people find it possible for evolutionary theory and Hinduism to coexist in intellectual practice, with about half of the 60-strong audience saying that they had been ‘taught’ evolution at school but rarely dealt with it in their practical scientific lives. Jeff was very pleased with both the reading and discussion, but still has to get his head round holding antithetical ideas at the same time!
